Your Doctor Is Wrong

I highly recommend the book YOUR DOCTOR IS WRONG: For Anyone Who Has Been Dismissed, Misdiagnosed or Mistreated by Dr. Sharon Norling.

It’s a fascinating eye-opener for anyone who seriously wants to take charge of their health.

This book is about knowing the right facts, finding the right doctor, getting the right tests, and getting the right diagnosis and treatment (including eating the right food).

In one of the largest studies on health care quality in America reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, it was found that patients receive proper care only 55% of the time.

“Noone is safe from poor quality medical care,” says Dr. Norling.

An astounding 783,936 Americans die each year as a result of the medical care they receive. Today’s medical system is the leading cause of death and injury in the US (Contrast this with 577,190 deaths due to cancer and about 600,000 due to heart disease.)

Dr. Norling connects the dots to find the root cause of symptoms and illnesses.

Her background is solid. She’s been a nurse, a hospital administrator, a faculty member at the University of Minnesota Medical School, an advocate (testifying before the White House Commission on Complementary Alternative Medicine Policy), and has also served in multiple leadership roles as Medical Director and senior management in two large healthcare organizations.

As a board-certified medical doctor, author, speaker, and highly-skilled researcher, she’s on the forefront of the shift toward a more functional, solution-oriented medical approach.

What you’ll find out about hormones, gut function, neurotransmitters, heart disease, addictions, food allergies, toxins (and more) within the 202 pages of this book will be more than some doctors currently know!

Illness starts because of a cause, illness continues because the cause continues, and illness can only be resolved when the cause is resolved. You must find the underlying or root cause of an illness or a symptom rather than just treating the tip of the iceberg with a pharmaceutical drug. It is more than just taking a pill or having a procedure. Medicine is more than just naming a disease. It is more than a pill for an ill. You need and deserve to live your best life.

Some compelling facts from her book:

Medication errors are among the most common medical errors, harming at least 1.5 million people every year.
Institute of Medicine of the National Academies

(Note: According to the Food and Drug Administration, that figure is a tad lower — 1.3 million people.)

Medication errors occur in nearly 1 out of every 5 doses given to patients in the typical hospital.
Archives of Internal Medicine, 2002

The number of people having adverse reactions to prescribed drugs in the hospital is 2.2 million per year.
Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), 1998

The frequency of medication errors and preventable adverse drug events is cause for serious concern.
Linda R. Cronenwett, Dean & Professor, School of Nursing, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

One 5-year study showed that the most common types of medication errors were a wrong dose, a wrong drug or a wrong route of administration.
American Journal of Health System-Pharmacy, Oct 2001

“Pharmaceutical drugs inhibit, block or antagonize specific bio-chemical pathways,” Norling says. “These are the very pathways that make your body work.”

Incidentally, almost all doctors Continuing Medical Education is given at medical conferences that are sponsored by pharmaceutical drug companies or biotech firms (where the focus is, more often than not, on managing symptoms rather than addressing root causes).

One of the first duties of the physician is to educate the masses not to take medicine.

It stands to reason that some doctors may well learn a thing or two that they didn’t know they didn’t know by reading her insightful, evidence-based book.

In the meantime, many patients have been told that they’ll need to stay on a pharmaceutical drug for the rest of their lives. “Well, of course, you do,” says Dr. Norling, “when the doctor hasn’t found the underlying cause or causes of the problem.”

According to the Annals of Family Medicine (October 2012), chronic illness affects 45% of the US population. Forty percent of people older than 60 years of age are now taking five or more medications. And more medications are prescribed to alleviate the side effects of the already-prescribed medications.

Most physicians are not adequately trained to assess the underlying causes of complex, chronic disease and to apply strategies such as nutrition, diet, and exercise to both treat and prevent these illnesses in their patients. They practice more of an acute care approach; a quick diagnosis, followed by a prescription, procedure or surgery. This can be effective in management of acute medical conditions, but not necessarily the best answers for chronic conditions.

Education is an important factor to health. “Is the life you are living worth the life you are giving up?” asks Dr. Norling.

“Health is a choice. Always choose it.”

What other doctors have to say about it:

“The traditional pharmacologic approach of ‘a pill for an ill’ is obsolete. In this inspiring book Dr. Norling has laid the new foundation for evaluation of the patient and their treatment using the new model of WHY the symptoms are present and looking for the root causes. This information is needed to revise patient care to a healing mode. You should read this book from cover to cover.”
MARK HOUSTON MD, MS, MSc — Vanderbilt University School of Medicine

“Combining her academic background, clinical experience and patient stories, she helps you end the cycle of being sick and tired.”
MARK HYMAN, MD

“Based on years of medical practice, Dr. Norling has done a thorough job of going beneath the surface to uncover root causes of the many conditions that affect us today. She then describes the treatments that, unlike conventional methods that just cover over the symptoms (or produce serious side effects!) actually get results based on our natural body’s physiology and chemistry. A must-read if you want to survive the current conventional medical system, and have vibrant health!”
HYLA CASS MD — author of 8 Weeks to Vibrant Health

“Don’t treat the symptoms, treat the source!” is the message I took away from Dr. Norling’s book. Medical care has become so fractured into its various specialty areas, that patients can sometimes get lost in the shuffle. Dr. Norling shows us how to put the pieces of the puzzle back together through her Functional Medicine approach. Treating the whole person is foundational to her model.”
R.W. WATKINS, MD, MPH, FAAFP

“Sharon Norling is a shining star in the new medicine. She brings laughter, joy and healing to all who see her. Read this book and benefit from her experience.”
GREGORY A. PLOTNIKOFF, MD, MTS, FACP — Co-author: Trust Your Gut

“Dr. Norling’s book may be seen as controversial because some people will not like what she has to say…they will find it hard to believe until they see all the facts as Dr.Norling presents them. Her thought-provoking facts challenge our traditional thinking about ‘right and wrong’ choices in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Exceptional!”
KATHLEEN FITZSIMONS, PhD

“Dr. Norling systemically outlines the process to health, wholeness and transformation. Thinking outside the accepted ‘norm’ box is the only way to improve and take control of our own health. Your Doctor is Wrong is empowering! It’s your path to optimal health.”
DAVID VILLARREAL, DDS

“Very useful information! Presented simply and to the point; obviously the result of many years of careful investigation and clinical experience. Identify and treat the cause as opposed to merely suppressing symptoms. Giving the body what it needs and it will function as nature intended. Brilliant!”
DR. STEPHEN M. DANIELSEN, N.D.
